Meeting your doom in Chaos Gate

If a hermit emerging from a cave after 20 years of isolation looked through my window he'd think it was still 1998. That's because I've dug up an old copy of Chaos Gate, an ancient PC game and only after doing a bit of work on the game files was I able to play it. Oh the memories...

This game belonged to someone I knew from a long time ago, we haven't talked in years so he probably won't want it back anytime soon. We're dealing with a turn based strategy game with an isometric view, set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. You command a force of your blue armoured space marines against the evil forces of chaos. You know they're evil because they can't do a single thing without shouting evil phrases like "Blood for the blood god!" or "Meet your doom!" This starts to grate on your nerves after a while.

You move your troops around with action points, each of your space marines has a limited number per turn and they're used up when you perform attacks. This brings us to combat. After an hour of gameplay I remembered that your standard weapon the boltgun is great for killing, it just takes 10 hits to kill someone. Since the other side also uses them, you can see where I'm going. So stock up on the big guns and anything that explodes. Your rules of engagement here will be "throw lots of grenades."

Or send in your melee troops, who'll hack the bad guys into pieces in a flurry of chainsword strokes. Yeah, chainsword. The best combination since sausage and beans.

There's also this map editor thing you can play around with. If I sound vague, it's because I still haven't figured out how to turn mine into playable game maps. However the ones I did make were metal as hell.

As I mentioned this game was made around 1998 and its age shows. For one thing no one makes these kind of games anymore. Games like Civilisation and Hearts of Iron are turn based but on a management type level while the Total War series renders its battles in real time. Still, it's kind of fun and it's taken 11 years for anyone to make another decent Warhammer 40k game.
