How are we not dead yet?: surviving by the skin of my teeth in FTL

The Hot Prospect is in a bad shape. I took a battering from those pirates while the civilian ship I helped made a hasty escape. The scrap from the pirates was not worth the trouble. Nothing left to do but to solider on now.

A rebel transport. The engines are still warming up, so I can't jump yet. I have to fight for the moment. Maybe I can gain something from this.

Yes I do gain something. An energy beam that slices through my hull and takes out life support. I have one hull point left. How are we not dead yet?
Well, the enemy ship's hull is in the same state and their shields are down. They have nothing available to bear down on me, as my laser salvos continually pound away at their weapons room.

That wasn't so bad. I did gain something useful. A new burst laser to add to my arsenal. My next destination is a store, where I can spend my whopping 148 scrap.

Okay, repairs have been made. The next jump brings us face to face with slave traders. Well, not literally face to face, there's the vacuum of space separating us. He offers us "labourers." Slavery cannot be forgiven! Our ship opens fire with everything. Before long they're begging to be spared and offer one of their "labourers" as tribute. Slavery cannot be forgiven. Of course, we're liberating this poor slave so it's alright. Welcome onboard Oni!
