Gloom: player with the most depressed and miserable family wins

Not so long ago, I used to shuffle miniature armies across tabletops. That's kind of in the past now, due to limited time and not knowing a single person crazy enough to take part in such a time consuming and expensive hobby.

That didn't stop my friends and I having a cracking good time playing Gloom. After seeing it on Wil Wheaton's webshow, I knew I had to get my hands on this. It's without a doubt the best £17.99 I've spent in a long time.

The goal is simple. Each player takes control of a dysfunctional family in this card based game and you score points for making your own as miserable and unhappy as possible. Then you kill them. At the same time, you try and make your opponents' families as happy as you can. Player with the most depressed and miserable family wins. Just one thing, you have to weave all of this into a story (as outlandish and stupid as you like).

It's all printed on these lovely clear plastic cards, with wonderfully morbid illustrations and motifs...very Lemony Snicket.

Since it's story based, we unleashed our ability to make up amazing stories on the fly (basically talking alot of bullsh*t).
