When you've got the sense of direction of a potato, satnav is a must

I've given up on my TomTom.

It's not because the navigation it provides is subpar. In fact its replacement, my HTC Desire, is only somewhat better and has that annoying robot voice. However the maintenance required is driving me nuts.

I got lost coming home one night because the TomTom's memory card inexplicably died on me. The only solution would be to reformat the memory card, which requires a computer.

I was in the middle of south Glasgow, the rain was coming down in buckets.

When I finally groped my way home, I tried the reformatting but that failed to bring the device back to life. I swapped memory card. I even tried a different USB cable. Nothing.

I could go out and buy a new TomTom model but that's expensive. Plus, there's the added expense of having to replace the car charger. It's cheap and falls apart after a few months of use. I've yet to find a decent one that actually lasts. The TomTom doesn't charge very well either. Keep it plugged in or it will die on you.

My smartphone is readily available and although its navigation eats into my internet usage, it's a small price to pay for such a valuable function.

When you've got the sense of direction of a potato, satnav is a must. Thanks TomTom, you've served me well but your retirement has come.
