On Gundam The Origin

Right now I've almost finished reading volume 2. The first two volumes mostly follow the anime, which isn't a bad thing. The original anime was wonderful and ranks as one of my favourites, but it had obvious limits which in turn placed restraints on the story that could be told.

I wouldn't be so bold as to say Gundam: The Origin surpasses the original source material, but it does do a lot of things better than the source could have. What it does do is to tell the classic tale of the One Year War but with the paper medium it has to work with it, it goes back and changes certain elements. Small things that lend a grander feel to the story.

I enjoy the small changes, the retcons, that have been introduced. The creators of the manga, have returned to the One Year War and retconned the designs of some mobile suits. Also, a nice touch is hinting at Amuro's newtype powers in the first volume. In the anime, the newtype idea seemed clumsily tacked on but here it's better handled.

As the series progresses, I suspect side characters will be expanded on as well. It's likely Gundam: The Origin will diverge from the source material, but not in ways that are unwelcome.
