After December, I won't be back at the demented pharmacy chain. On my last post, I sounded very cheerful for someone who no longer has a permanent job. After reading the "woop, woop" in the title, some might even suspect this pharmacist has gone insane. However I'm confident I made the right best possible decision. Better to make a radical change when you're still young and without too many commitments.
Okay, working as a locum won't be all sunshine and roses. There are no paid holidays, I have to do my own taxes and as always with self employment there may be periods with little or no income.
However being a locum means I won't have to put up with stuff like performance reviews. Oh Mrs line manager, how I'll miss you telling me I'm a poor pharmacist. I don't get enough "customer feedback" therefore I'm useless.

Also, I no longer have to attend company conferences. I really love getting together in a cheap hotel room full of other pharmacists who fall into two camps a) live for the company and b) loath the company. Then we sit and pretend to laugh at the poor jokes that the higher ups tell at these shoddy gatherings, nod and smile at what they have to say, then go home feeling as though half the day was wasted.
I'll miss being able to milk the discount for all its worth. No more 25% discount on toiletries. Damn, I'm regretting my decision already.
I can take holidays whenever I want. Sure they'll be unpaid holidays but at least I can devote more time to family and friends. At the old pharmacy chain, I would have had to submit my holiday requests a year in advance. You can't put a price on the flexibility locuming provides.
It's a radical move but as a certain captain once said, "Risk...risk is our business."
