Resident Evil: there are zombies in the Spencer mansion

Editor's note:
This was originally published in December 2016. With the upcoming release of Resident 2 Remake (another game to make me wet my pants), it's a good opportunity to republish this.

With Resident Evil 2 Remake around the corner, we should revisit Resident Evil Remake HD. I never did get very far in the original Playstation release. The zombie turning around cut scene was the furthest I got. It was a team effort too, between 10 year old me and my 13 year old sister.

Now I get to experience it again, but with the advantage of being older and braver. One of those things may be a lie.

Resident Evil Remake HD looks amazing. There's a real sense of atmosphere and ambience to the game.

Of course, before long, you find out there are zombies in the Spencer mansion. This will come as no surprise to anyone who knows anything about this franchise.

I'm quite a methodical person, and approached the game in the same way. I ended up taking screenshots of the map and scribbling stuff down in Windows paint, like where the storage boxes were, or which hallways have a crapload of zombies.

Back in 1996, people probably just used a pencil and homework notebook.

Playing as Jill, I had Barry to help me through this ordeal. Capcom is cruel, so he disappears almost immediately. It does, however, ratchet up the tension in this horror game.

Speaking of tension, Capcom sticks with the fixed camera angles. Those awful camera angles. To make life difficult and keep you constantly on edge. It's really unsettling.

The game leaves weapons, ammo and healing items scattered in seemingly random places, but it's all cleverly done to keep you alive but off balance. Finally get the shotgun? Great, you feel invincible now. Too bad you only have 6 rounds of ammo for it.

Poor Richard, he faced off against that big snake while I snatched that item and bolted for the door. Every man for himself I guess?

To continue the cruelty, Capcom made some changes to the remake. Like the Crimson heads. If you don't dispose of dead zombies, they might come back as Crimson heads next time you revisit the same area. They're very fast and very deadly. Really, that's just nasty.

Not an arachnaphobe, but spiders are still kind of scary. I was sitting next to Craig when I played this game, and then we walked into that room. Those camera angles are just the worse.

I did a 180 and promptly walked back out (in the game, not in real life), exclaiming "No, no, no thank you. Don't call us, we'll call you."

Thing about Resident Evil, you have limited carrying space so need to carefully decide what to bring with you and what to leave in storage boxes as you explore the mansion. When I faced the Tyrant for the first time, I found myself a bit under equipped.

On the first time, I got impaled on his big claws. True story.

You can get this on Steam for £15.99. Highly recommended.
