Boots made the kind of rookie mistake that only happens on TV

Last week I wrote about the perfect storm for Boots (misuse of MURs and public money). This week, the pharmacy giant might deserve a round of slow clapping. The Guardian received a strong letter from an independent pharmacist writing to defend Boots. However, there are a few issues with the letter:

  • On closer inspection, the original was found to have been heavily edited before being emailed. The letter had been typed on a Word document then edited with track changes still present.

  • The edits had been made by Laura Vergani, Vice President of Walgreens Boots Alliance. I think she might be a teensy bit biased.

  • The author, a Nick Kaye, claims to have no affiliation. He has been revealed to be part of Alphega, a Boots owned medicines wholesaler, and won the Alphega award for Pharmacy of the year. He might also be a teensy bit biased.

It seems too good to be true, the kind of rookie mistake that only happens on TV where Peter Capaldi shouts cuss words at people.

A man like Nick Kayes is entitled to defend Boots if he wishes. However, we must re-iterate the facts. Written shortly after the Guardian's investigation. Passed to a senior executive for editing. Emailed to the Guardian with track changes/edits still in place. Author is affiliated with Alphega and received an award from them.
